Foundation Beginnings
Who We Are
The Scripps Ranch Old Pros were founded in 1979 as a way for neighbors in Scripps Ranch to connect through sports, friendship, and shared experiences. What began as a social group has grown into one of the area’s most enduring community organizations. For more than 45 years, the Old Pros have brought people together through recreational leagues, community events, and long-standing traditions like the Fourth of July Run & Ride. Along the way, the group has given back through volunteer service, financial support, and a deep commitment to local youth and families. To expand and formalize this impact, the Scripps Ranch Old Pros Foundation was created to focus specifically on charitable fundraising and community support.
Our Mission
We raise funds within Scripps Ranch and across San Diego to create opportunities for youth sports, support college-bound graduating seniors, and give back to the Scripps Ranch community through financial support and hands-on programs. Every dollar raised goes directly back into our community.
Origins of a Community Tradition
In the late 1970s, a local real estate company launched a 4th of July run and picnic to bring the community together. The event’s immediate success eventually outpaced the resources of its founders. To ensure the tradition continued, the civic association assumed management of the picnic, while the Scripps Ranch Old Pros (SROP) proudly took over the Run.
Over the decades, the event has grown significantly in both popularity and scope. SROP eventually expanded the festivities to include 50-mile and 25-mile bike rides. Thanks to overwhelming community support and the generosity of our local sponsors, these events began to generate a steady profit.
Commitment to Youth and Athletics
As a sports-oriented organization, the Old Pros chose to reinvest these revenues back into the community by supporting youth and local athletic programs. As participation in our runs and rides reached new heights, we recognized an opportunity to honor student-athletes who excelled both on the field and in the classroom. This led to the establishment of the SROP Scholarship Fund. For over 35 years, the Old Pros have awarded scholarships upon local students, providing a growing pool of funds to support education, youth sports, and essential community activities.
A Legacy of Community Spirit
Scripps Ranch is defined by its community spirit. Many of our members have watched their children grow up here, and we are now seeing a third generation of families enjoying the benefits of Scripps Ranch life. The Old Pros are proud to have played a role in the success of this community. With the ongoing help of our members and community, we are committed to supporting our youth for years to come.
The SROP Foundation: A New Chapter
In 2024, past scholarship recipients joined the Old Pros board to take a major step forward: the establishment of the SROP Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization. The Foundation was formed to expand our reach, allowing us to increase funding for education, youth athletics, and community projects. We are excited to invite regional businesses, community organizations, and individuals to join our mission through tax-deductible donations. Because the Foundation is run entirely by volunteers, every contribution goes directly toward benefiting the scholars, athletes, and programs that make Scripps Ranch a wonderful place to live.
